 ཀྱང་ཡང་འང་

 

Name of the particle is ‘རྒྱན་སྡུད། ‘cohesive particles’’ 

 

Lit. meaning: 

རྒྱན་ ornamenting, སྡུད་ including up

 

• FUNCTIONS (འཇུག་པ།):

 

I. ཚིག་རྒྱན་དུ་འཇུག་པ། Functioning as a ‘phrase ornament’

II. སྡུད་པ་ལ་འཇུག་པ། Functioning as ‘including one’​

1. མཐུན་པའི་ཚིག་རྒྱན་དུ་འཇུག་པ། Functioning as matching phrase ornament 

2. མི་མཐུན་པའི་ཚིག་རྒྱན་དུ་འཇུག་པ། Functioning as non-matching phrase ornament

 

1. མཐུན་པའི་ཚིག་རྒྱན་དུ་འཇུག་པ།

Functioning as matching phrase ornament

It is translatable as: indeed, of course, certainly, rather, for sure, definitely, etc.

 

དཔེར་བརྗོད། Examples:

 

1.

 

དེ་ལ་སེམས་ཡོད་པས། དེ་བདེ་བ་ལ་དགའ་ཡང་དགའ།

དེ་ that/it/he/she, ལ་ to, with, - སེམས་ mind, - ཡོད་ have/has, there is, པས that’s why, since, ། /  དེ that/it/he/she, / བདེ་བ་ happiness, ལ་ towards, / དགའ་ཡང་དགའ of course would love/like, །

Since it has a mind, certainly it would love happiness.

 

2.

 

ཁོང་ཆོས་པ་ཡིན་པས། ཁོང་གི་ཀུན་སྤྱོད་མཛེས་ཀྱང་མཛེས།

ཁོང་ he/she, - ཆོས་པ་ Dharma practitioner, - ཡིན་ is, པས that’s why, because of that, since, ། >  ཁོང་གི་ his/her, ཀུན་སྤྱོད་ behaviour, / མཛེས་ཀྱང་མཛེས of course would be beautiful, །

Since he/she is a practitioner, certainly his/her behavior would be beautiful.

 

3. 

 

ཁོང་ཚོང་པ་ཡིན་ན་ཁོང་ལ་དངུལ་ཡོད་ཀྱང་ཡོད།

ཁོང་ he/she, / ཚོང་པ་ businessman, / ཡིན་ is, ན་ if, > ཁོང་ he/she, ལ་ to, with, / དངུལ་ money, / ཡོད་ཀྱང་ཡོད of course would have, །

If he is a businessman, certainly he would have money.

 

4. 

 

ཁོང་ཆོས་པ་ཡིན་ན་ཁོང་ལ་བསོད་ནམས་ཡོད་ཀྱང་ཡོད།

ཁོང་ he/she, / ཆོས་པ་ Dharma practitioner, / ཡིན་ is, ན་ if, since, > ཁོང་ he/she, ལ་ to, with, / བསོད་ནམས་ merit, / ཡོད་ཀྱང་ཡོད of course would have, །

If he is a practitioner, certainly he would have merits.

ཐུགས་སྤྲོ་དེ་ཁོང་གི་གྲོགས་པོ་ཉེ་ཤོས་ཤིག་གི་སྐྱེས་སྐར་ཐུགས་སྤྲོ་ཡིན་ཕྱིར།

ཁོང་ཐུགས་སྤྲོ་དེ་ལ་འགྲོ་ཡང་འགྲོ།

ཐུགས་སྤྲོ་ party, དེ་ that, the, / ཁོང་གི་ his/her, གྲོགས་པོ་ friend, ཉེ་ཤོས་ most close, ཤིག་ a, གི་ of, སྐྱེས་སྐར་ birthday, ཐུགས་སྤྲོ་ party, / ཡིན་ is, ཕྱིར since, because, ། > 
ཁོང་ he/she, / ཐུགས་སྤྲོ་ party, དེ་ that, the, ལ་ to, / འགྲོ་ཡང་འགྲོ of course would go, །

Because the party is his/her best friend’s birthday party, certainly he/she would go to the party.

 

2. མི་མཐུན་པའི་རྒྱན་དུ་འཇུག་པ།

Functioning as non-matching ornament

 

Translated as: but, despite, in spite of, even, although, etc.

 

དཔེར་བརྗོད། Examples:

 

1.

 

བླ་མ་ཡོད་ཀྱང་དམ་ཆོས་ཞུ་མཁན་དཀོན།

བླ་མ་ ‘Lama’, ‘Guru’, Master, / ཡོད་ there is/are, ཀྱང་ but, even, > དམ་ཆོས་ Sacred Dharma, ཞུ་མཁན་ one who receives, / དཀོན is rare, །

There are ‘Lamas’, but one who receives the sacred Dharma is rare.

 

2.

 

དམ་ཆོས་ཞུས་ཀྱང་ཉམས་ལེན་བྱེད་མཁན་དཀོན།

དམ་ཆོས་ Sacred Dharma, / ཞུས་ received,  ཀྱང་ although, > ཉམས་ལེན་བྱེད་མཁན་ one who practices, / དཀོན is rare, །

Although the sacred Dharma is received, one who practices it is rare.

 

3.

 

དམ་ཆོས་ཉམས་ལེན་བྱས་ཀྱང་རྟོགས་པ་འཐོབ་མཁན་དཀོན།

དམ་ཆོས་ Sacred Dharma, / ཉམས་ལེན་བྱས་ practiced, ཀྱང་ even though, > རྟོགས་པ་ realization, - འཐོབ་མཁན་ one who attains, / དཀོན is rare, rare, །

Even though the sacred Dharma is practiced, one who attains the realization is rare.

4.

 

སངས་རྒྱས་བྱོན་ཀྱང་དམ་ཆོས་མ་བསྟན།

སངས་རྒྱས་ Buddha, / བྱོན་ came, ཀྱང་ even though, - དམ་ཆོས་ Sacred Dharma, / མ་ not, བསྟན taught, །

Even though the Buddha came, the sacred Dharma was not taught.

 

5. 

 

གོ་སྐབས་ཡོད་ཀྱང་གོ་སྐབས་ལེན་མཁན་མེད།

གོ་སྐབས་ opportunity, / ཡོད་ there is, ཀྱང་ although, > གོ་སྐབས་ opportunity, - ལེན་མཁན་ one who takes, / མེད not there, །

Although there are opportunities, there are no opportunists.

 

6.

 

སེམས་ཅན་ལ་བདེ་བའི་གོ་སྐབས་ཡོད་ཀྱང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་གྱི་རྒྱུ་ལ་འཇུག

སེམས་ཅན་ sentient beings, ལ་ to, with, / བདེ་བ happiness, འི་ of, གོ་སྐབས་ opportunity, / ཡོད་ have/has, there is, ཀྱང་  but, > སྡུག་བསྔལ་ suffering, གྱི་ of, རྒྱུ་ cause, ལ་ in, towards, / འཇུག engage,

Sentient beings have opportunities of happiness but engage in the causes of suffering.

 

7.

 

བླ་མའི་ལྷན་དུ་ཡུན་རིང་བསྡད་ཀྱང་དད་པ་མེད་ན་བྱིན་བརླབས་མི་ཐོབ།

བླ་མ ‘Lama’, ‘Guru’, Master, འི་ལྷན་དུ་ with, together with, / ཡུན་རིང་ long time, / བསྡད་ stayed, ཀྱང་ despite, > དད་པ་ faith, / མེད་ not there, ན་ if, > བྱིན་བརླབས་ blessings, / མི་ not, ཐོབ gained, 

Despite staying a long time with a Lama, if there is no faith, blessings are not gained.

II. སྡུད་པ་ལ་འཇུག་པ།

Functioning as ‘including one’

 

Translated as: also, even, etc.

 

དཔེར་བརྗོད། Examples:

 

1.

 

ཁོང་ཡང་ནང་པ་ཡིན།

ཁོང་ he/she, ཡང་ also, / ནང་པ་ Buddhist, / ཡིན is, །།

He/she is also a Buddhist.

 

2.

 

ཁོང་གྱིས་ཀྱང་ནང་ཆོས་ལ་སློབ་སྦྱོང་བྱས།

ཁོང་ he/she, གྱིས་ by, ཀྱང་ also, / ནང་ཆོས་ Buddhism, ལ་ in, / སློབ་སྦྱོང་བྱས studied, །

He/she also studied Buddhism.

 

3.

 

ཁོང་ལ་ཡང་བླ་མ་ཡོད།

ཁོང་ he/she, ལ་ to, with, ཡང་ also, / བླ་མ་ / ཡོད has, །

He/she also has a ‘Lama’.

 

4.

 

འཛམ་གླིང་ལ་དབང་བྱེད་པའི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ལྟ་བུ་ཡང་མཐར་སྤྲང་པོར་འགྱུར་བའི་དུས་ཀྱང་ཡོད།

འཛམ་གླིང་ world, ལ་ to, with, over, - དབང་བྱེད་པ powering, having power, འི་ of, རྒྱལ་པོ་ king, ལྟ་བུ་ like, as such, ཡང་ also, / མཐར་ at the end, / སྤྲང་པོ poor, ར་ as, to be, - འགྱུར་བ becoming, འི་ of, དུས་ time, ཀྱང་ also, / ཡོད has, །

Even a king as such who has power over the world also has a risk of becoming poor in the end.

 

5.

 

སྨན་ཡང་འཆི་བའི་རྐྱེན་བྱེད་པ་ཡང་མང་པོ་ཡོད།

སྨན་ medicine, ཡང་ even, also, - འཆི་བ dying, འི་ of, རྐྱེན་ condition, - བྱེད་པ་ doing, ཡང་ also, / མང་པོ་ many, / ཡོད there is/are, །

Even medicines conditioning to death are also many there.

 

6.

 

མཚམས་མཚམས་ལ་མཆོད་རྟེན་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་ལ་བ་ཕྱུགས་ཀྱང་སྐོར་བ་བྱེད་པ་མཐོང་།

མཚམས་མཚམས་ sometimes, ལ་ at, / མཆོད་རྟེན་ Stupa, རིན་པོ་ཆེ་ precious, ལ་ at, - བ་ཕྱུགས་ cow, ཀྱང་ also, - སྐོར་བ་བྱེད་པ་ doing circumambulation, / མཐོང་ see[n], །

Sometimes even cows are seen doing circumambulations at the precious Stupa.

• WRITING WAYS: (སྦྱོར་ཚུལ།)

 

The words ending with the letter ག་ད་བ་ས་  get the particle ཀྱང་

 

གཅིག་      གཅིག་ཀྱང་མེད།            there is not even one

ཟད་        ཅུང་ཟད་ཀྱང་མེད།          there is not even a bit

བབ་        སྲོག་ལ་བབ་ཀྱང་།           even [it] costs the life 

ཐོས་        ཐོས་ཀྱང་ཚིག་ཏུ་ལུས།       remained as words even heard

ཕྱིནད་      ཕྱིནད་ཀྱང་མ་སླེབས།        went but not reached

འཇིགས་    འཇིགས་ཀྱང་འཇིགས།       of course afraid

 

The words ending with the letter ང་ན་མ་ར་ལ་  get the particle ཡང་:

 

གང་         གང་ཡང་                    anything

གཞན་       གཞན་ཡང་                  moreover, others too,

ནམ་         ནམ་ཡང་                    any time

སླར་         སླར་ཡང་                    once again, still,

དཔལ་       དཔལ་ཡང་ཐོབ་             gained also the glory

 

The words ending with the letter འ་ get the particle འང་ or ཡང་ :

 

དགའ་        དགའང་དགའ་                of course joy

Note: དགའ་འང་དགའ་ is written in a single syllable by removing the suffix འ་ and the syllable dot of the preceding word. Thus, it is དགའང་དགའ་. 

 

The words without an ending letter also get the particle འང་ or ཡང་ :
